If you’re a frequent flyer with Delta Airlines, you might want to look at adding an airline credit card, particularly a Delta co-branded credit card.  These kinds of cards allow cardholders to earn miles on purchases and often have travel perks such as airport lounge access, priority boarding, or free checked bag(s).

American Express has partnered with Delta Airlines to create several options for Delta loyalists.  These range from basic, no annual fee to high-fee premium cards with extra perks and benefits.  All have a welcome offer with a spending requirement.  Regardless of which card you choose, you will still earn at least 2X SkyMiles per $1 spent on Delta purchases.  Finally, choose the best Delta co-branded credit card that suits your lifestyle, spending habits, and travel perks you just can’t live without!

Delta SkyMiles Blue: The Basics

Best for occasional Delta flyers who don’t want to pay an annual fee but earn a decent amount of SkyMiles & don’t care for the extra perks.  It is actually the only Delta credit card without an annual fee.  While the welcome bonus is low, it also has a very low spending requirement.  You will earn the typical 2X miles per $1 spent on Delta purchases, which can be redeemed for flights on Delta or any of its partner airlines.  However, you also earn 2X on dining worldwide and 20% back in statement credit for Delta in-flight purchases.  Not too many extra perks, but that’s understandable for a no-annual fee card.

Delta SkyMiles Gold: The Basics

The Delta SkyMiles Gold is perfect for jet-setters who prefer to have things like priority boarding & free checked bags but pay a smaller annual fee.  The Delta SkyMiles Gold offers a decent welcome bonus, although compared with other airline cards such as United Explorer, its return is extremely low.  The card earns 2X miles on Delta purchases, restaurants, & at U.S. supermarkets.  Additionally, you can earn a $100 Delta credit by spending at least $10,000 in purchases during the first year.  Not too shabby, especially considering it has $0 annual fee for first year and only $99 afterwards.

Delta SkyMiles Platinum: The Basics

The SkyMiles Platinum is best for serious spenders and jet-setters loyal to Delta Airlines.  This card has the best earning rates among all Delta credit cards and gives cardholders a boost towards that coveted Delta Medallion status.  After spending $2,000 within the first 3 months of account opening, you earn 40,000 bonus miles PLUS 5,000 Medallion Qualification Miles.  This bonus could be worth over $1,000 in travel.  The SkyMiles  Platinum earns 3x miles per $1 spent on Delta purchases (made directly with Delta) & hotels (directly with the hotel).  In addition, it earns a respectable 2x miles on restaurants and groceries at U.S. supermarkets.  Everything else earns 1x miles.

But what really stands out are the extra perks.  First, you get a fee credit for Global Entry/TSA Pre✓ every 4/4.5 years.  Second, the card comes with an annual companion certificate that can be used for a domestic main cabin round trip.  Third, there is discounted access to Delta Sky Club lounges.  And last, but not least, priority boarding and a host of other great travel perks to make your journey smoother.  Nevertheless, all these great things don’t come cheap.  The card does have an annual fee of $250!!  But savvy travelers will find a way to help offset this fee.

Delta SkyMiles Reserve: The Basics

The Delta SkyMiles Reserve is for flyers who prefer to travel in style and comfort.  It is the priciest of the Delta cards, at $550 a year, however, depending on your budget and travel preferences, you might just find the steep fee worth it.  Similar to the SkyMiles Platinum, it offers a good welcome bonus plus Medallion Qualification Miles (MQM) after spending $5,000 during first 3 months.  Spend $30,000/year in purchases on your card and earn an extra 15,000 MQMs to start unlocking the real benefits that come with Medallion Status.  Reach Silver Medallion Status and begin earning a whopping 7x miles per $1 on Delta purchases, complimentary upgrades to first class, priority waitlisting etc.

Despite the high annual fee, the SkyMiles Reserve card is loaded with extras.  You will receive complimentary access to American Express Centurion and Delta Sky Clubs Lounges, free credit for Global Entry/TSA Pre✓, a companion pass, and many other benefits.  If you are a heavy spender and appreciate being taken care of while traveling, give the Delta SkyMiles Reserve a thought!  However, if you prefer a broader range of categories beyond Delta Airlines but almost similar perks, check out the American Express Platinum Card.
