The British Airways Visa Signature Card is best for …
Frequent travellers who have good credit and know how to maximize rewards. In addition, like most airline credit cards, it also favors those who prefer to fly British Airways and partner airlines, such as Iberia. Finally, big spenders can also earn a companion ticket every year, provided they make yearly purchases totalling $30,000. If you manage to snag the companion ticket, your travel partner can fly on the same flight & cabin, including first class!!
The Welcome Offer
New cardholders will receive a sizeable bonus of 50,000 Avios after spending at least $3,000 during the first 3 months of account opening. That translates into a spending spree of at least $1,000/month. Unlike most airline credit cards with a 3month period for bonuses, the BA Signature will give you a chance to earn a Travel Together ticket if you spend $20,000 during that first year. It is also worth noting that during the first year, the bonus requirement can be spent on any purchase, and not just on British Airways.
British Airways Visa Signature Rewards & Redemption
For the first year, cardholders earn 5x Avios per $1 spent on British Airways, Iberia, & Aer Lingus purchases. Afterwards, you earn the usual 3x Avios, including on hotel stays. Every other purchase earns 1x Avios per $1. Unlike other cards, such as the United Quest or even the Emirates Skywards Mastercard, there are no bonus points for extra things like car rentals or restaurants.
Obviously, the best way to redeem your Avios is to book reward flights with British Airways or its partner airlines, such as American Airlines or Qantas. Other ways of spending your Avios include flight upgrades, hotels, car rentals, tours etc. Avios can be transferred between British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus, however, they cannot be transferred to other oneworld alliance members.
The Bottom Line
The BA Visa Signature Card is a solid option for British Airways fans. And because it’s part of oneworld, you can use your Avios on U.S based airlines such as Alaska or American Airways. However, if you regularly fly British Airways, you will be aware of the extra taxes and fees they like to tack on airfare! Additionally, like most airline credit cards, it doesn’t offer extra perks like you would find on a general travel credit card such as Chase Sapphire Preferred or even the Capital One Venture Rewards Card.
