Hilton Honors Surpass Card is best for…
Travellers who prefer to primarily stay at Hilton Hotels. Although the card does earn 3x points per $1 on hotel stays with other brands, points are much better spent at Hilton. Additionally, the absence of pesky foreign transaction fees will also be a welcome plus for international jet-setters. Heavy spenders can earn the coveted Diamond status in a year by spending at least $40,000 on eligible purchases.
The Welcome Bonus
The Hilton Honors Surpass offers a hefty introductory bonus of 130,000 points. To earn it, you must spend at least $2,000 during the first 3 months of account opening. This translates to a spending budget of at least $667/month. Furthermore, spend $10,000 on qualifying purchases during the first 6 months and earn an additional 50,000 points. So, all in all, you can rack up 180,000 bonus Hilton Honors points!
Hilton Honors Surpass Rewards & Redemption
This card has tiered earnings for its rewards. First, cardmembers can earn 12x points per $1 spent at any hotel that falls under the Hilton umbrella. Second, you can earn 6x points per $1 at restaurants (including takeout & delivery), gas stations, & supermarkets in the U.S. All other purchases earn a respectable 3x points, unlike most hotel-branded cards which earn the typical 1x points.
Obviously, the best way to redeem points is through booking hotel stays with Hilton. Other ways to use points include shopping, car rentals, Lyft rides, etc. Points can also be transferred to your family & friends (granted they are Hilton Honors members) or into airline miles with travel partners. The Bottom Line
The Hilton Honors American Express Surpass Card is a good travel card option for travellers who love Hilton Hotels. The $95 annual fee is about the same you would expect from cards that offer the same range of perks. It also offers a very generous 3x, much unlike the typical 1x offered. That’s much more than other hotel credit cards such as the Marriott Bonvoy or even favorites like the Chase Sapphire Preferred.
On the other hand, if you are not partial to Hilton hotels or any hotel for that matter, a general travel credit card might be a better option for you.
