The IHG Rewards Club Premier Card is best for …

Frequent travelers who prefer to stay at IHG hotels such as Crowne Plaza or Holiday Inn etc.  As one of the largest hotel chains,  IHG hotels are present in more than 100 countries across the globe.  In addition to earning up to 25x reward points per $1 spent at IHG hotels, cardholders earn a reward night every account anniversary.  Plus, redeem points for a stay of 4 nights or more, and get an extra night free.

If, however, you don’t make as many trips make the card worthwhile, consider the IHG Rewards Club Traveler Card.  You still get rewarded for staying at IHG hotels but the card has no annual fee.

The Welcome Bonus

The IHG Premier has a rather generous welcome bonus.  Spend $3,000 on purchases during the first 3 months of account opening and earn 125,000 bonus reward points, plus 1 reward night.  Additionally, if you spend $20,000 plus 1 purchase every anniversary, you can earn an extra 10,000 points.  According to Chase, the welcome bonus is worth 4 nights at Hotel Indigo in Brooklyn, NY.

Rewards & Redemption

Cardmembers earn 10x points for an IHG hotel stay, 10x points for joining IHG membership, plus 5x points for Platinum membership (which comes with the card). This gives a total reward earnings rate of 25x points per $1 for every IHG hotel stay.  Furthermore, you earn 2x points per $1 on groceries, gas stations, & restaurants.  All other purchases earn the usual 1x points per $1.

Points can be redeemed in a variety of ways.  First, you can redeem them for hotel stays (best way to get more bang for your points).  Second, you can purchase Apple gift cards, flights, car rentals, etc.  Finally, points can also be transferred to IHG partner airlines.  The majority of the airlines transfer at a rate of  10,000 points for 2,000 miles.  However, some offer extremely low rates, such as El Al Israel Airlines.

Additional Perks

Bottom Line

With the vast number of IHG hotels around the globe, it would be very easy to accumulate points.  If you do prefer IHG hotels, then this card might be a no-brainer.  In terms of rewards, it offers the same rates as other hotel cards, such as some of the Marriott Bonvoy cards.  Plus, instead of the typical $95 annual fee, the IHG Premium charges $89.  However, if you are not particularly loyal to IHG hotels or any hotel for that matter, consider a general travel credit card.  In addition, if you don’t want to pay the pesky annual fee, there are plenty of good travel cards with no annual fee.
