If you are a fan of Marriott hotels, consider adding a Marriott branded credit card.  While Chase offers 2 co-branded hotel credit cards with Marriott, American Express has one.  You’ll earn at least 3x Marriott Bonvoy Points on all cards, with some earning double that amount.  Not all Marriott cards are created the same; there are different welcome bonuses & travel perks, and not to mention fees associated with each.  With this in mind, picking the right one for you will depend on your budget, spending habits, and how much you love Marriott hotels!

Bonvoy Brilliant: The Basics

The Bonvoy Brilliant is designed for Marriott Hotel loyalists who also prefer premium perks and are willing to pay the hefty $450 annual fee.  Not only does it earn a good 6x points per $1 at Marriott Hotels, but 3x at U.S. restaurants and flights booked directly with the airline.  Although it has a similar welcome bonus as the Bonvoy Boundless, you will still get more bang for your points.  First, there is the $300 annual statement credit and $100 Marriott Bonvoy property credit.   Second, you also get credit for Global Entry/TSA Pre✓.  All these credits, together with the sign-up bonus, can easily offset the annual fee.  Finally, there is also free night every anniversary, complimentary lounge access, Gold Elite Status and a host of other extra perks.

Ultimately, the Bonvoy Brilliant can be worth a second look for someone who spends a lot of money while traveling and is comfortable paying a higher annual fee.   Moreover, you must also book primarily with Marriott Hotels, otherwise you can just go with either the Bonvoy Bold or Boundless.  Those interested in transferring points to other travel partners, such as airlines, might want to look elsewhere.  For premium benefits with a higher price tag, a card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve or American Express Platinum might be more suitable.  Otherwise, Chase Sapphire Preferred can be a cheaper option still.
